International Conference on the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (Regional or Minority Languages No. 1) (1998)

The International Conference on the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages was held in Strasbourg on 26 and 27 March 1998, to mark the entry into force of the first European legal instrument devoted to the protection and promotion of regional or minority languages.
The charter entered into force on 1 March 1998 with seven contracting parties. During the conference, experts in the field made in-depth review of the system of protection granted by the charter.
This system of protection covers such areas as education, the media, public and judicial authorities, cultural facilities, and social and economic life.
