Due to the rapid development of digital communication across the globe, journalism today is drastically changing. The sector is shifting from its traditional approach towards a new kind of news making process, called “open journalism”. It encourages online engagement and collaboration by the “users/readers” and creates this way a new dimension of media and news.

This IRIS plus article examines the new forms of interactive bi-directional journalism, which are only partly covered by the existing legal frameworks.

LEAD ARTICLE

User-generated Content and Audiovisual News: The Ups and Downs of an Uncertain Relationship

The Lead Article takes a closer look at open journalism and sets out to illustrate the nature of non-media sources of information and their impact on media content and news-making. It particularly examines the concept of user-generated content (UGC) and the different meanings attributed to the term, distinguishing between several types of UGC and the legal implications of their differences. The Lead Article furthermore focuses on the broader regulatory and policy context in which UGC needs to be assessed as well as on exploring its developing relationship with the audiovisual sector.
